The water as always been an endless frontier for divers to explore ever since man dared to dream beyond land. Never getting bored of it, divers go wherever they can to see the wonderful wildlife in the sea. The USS Oriskany is one of the best places to dive for divers of every level. This 1950 aircraft carrier was sunk into the great ocean about 20 miles off the coast of Pensacola. The visibility of the ship can be seen as high as 100 feet and is a regularly visited site by diver operators all over Florida.
But what makes it an adventure for the amateur and the experienced alike, is that the ship can be reached at 70 feet. Done with the purpose of becoming an artificial reef for wildlife, the USS Oriskany is the largest ship in the world to be ever sunk for this purpose. Amateurs can easily reach the ships command tower, also known as the island, at 70 feet below.
The Scuba Diving magazine labeled the ship as “the uncontested centerpiece of the northwest Florida Wrecks.” It is a beauty for all to hold. As amateurs increase their skill over time, or experienced diver who are ready, the flight deck is at 130 feet and well within reach of recreational divers with the deep diving experience. The vessel rests 212 feet below on the depths on the ocean floor. .
Tom Forlander loves to go out on a warm summer’s day and scuba dive. Having lived in Florida his whole life, he has been able to go scuba diving over and again, finding all of the best spots.
